On July 14, 1964, activist Percy Green climbed 125 feet up the then-under construction Gateway Arch to protest the lack of African Americans working on the project. Learn about the lifelong activist’s bold and daring civil rights protest at the very spot where it happened just over 60 years ago. Meet the group at Luther Ely Smith Square and walk with Mr. Green to the north leg of the arch. Once the group arrives at the arch, Mr. Green will share his memories of his protest and talk about its lasting legacy. Percy Green will then move inside the Arch visitor center, where he will sign limited-edition posters that will available for free. This event is presented in partnership with the St. Louis African American Artifacts Festival and Bazaar.
Monday, Oct. 7 @ 10am – 2pm
Meet outside at Luther Ely Smith Square (just west of the visitor center entrance). Program will take place inside the visitor center if there is inclement weather.
